At VIEWdigital we want to build trust in journalism and believe you should make sure the media organisations you support have:

  • Ability – the relevant skill, understanding and professionalism
  • Benevolence – their journalists show an interest in readers’ lives
  • Integrity – live out their organisational values
  • Predictability – have a consistent track record

VIEWdigital is an online platform. We aim to independently produce and publish original social affairs journalism in VIEW magazine/ezine and VIEWdigital news site. We cover issues that have a major effect on society and get readers talking about them. VIEW readers are interested in topical social issues and we as journalists are motivated to provide interesting social affairs stories to inform our readers. VIEW magazine is printed and distributed to libraries and we also organise events to promote discussion and debate on issues raised by our journalism.

We are a non-profit community media organisation regulated by IMPRESS. I took the ‘four pillars of trust’ outlined above from a recent talk by the organisation’s Chief Executive. We do not receive funding to produce our journalism, so we provide a number of services which provide income which help us produce original journalism these are:

• Magazine sponsorship opportunities

• Media training

• Media Consultancy

• Contract Media Production for other organisations.

VIEWdigital chose to seek regulation from IMPRESS so readers could have trust in the journalism we produce on social affairs and community issues.

He said: “Trust cannot be taken for granted in this era of extreme scepticism. And every drop in trust that affects an individual publisher affects the wider industry. Every drop in trust in the media affects democracy, as we search in vain for a shared foundation of facts on which to base our political choices. And that is a problem for all of us.”

As a former member of Ofcom’s Advisory Committee for Northern Ireland, I agree with Jonathan, that is why VIEWdigital is one of the publishers regulated IMPRESS,
