Journalists at VIEWdigital and tech experts from Avata Industries have been awarded 50,000 euro from tech giant Google. The funding from the Google Digital News Innovation Fund will be used to develop ‘The Data Times’, a prototype tool for community journalists to do more data-driven journalism. VIEWdigital co founder and editor Brian Pelan said: “We’re delighted with this funding from Google. Una Murphy is the co-founder of VIEW and coordinates our digital and broadcast media workshops. She has produced and directed current affairs/factual/documentary programmes for UTV, TG4, RTE and BBC, reported for The Daily Mirror and The Irish Times, and worked on media campaigns for Save the Children Northern Ireland and CARDI, The Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland. She has taught journalism courses at various universities and colleges.

Brian Pelan, co-founder and executive editor of VIEW, has more than 20 years’ experience as a journalist, including working for the Belfast Telegraph, the Western Mail in Cardiff, and the Examiner group in Cork. His skills include editing, design and features writing. Brian is also lecturing at the Belfast Metropolitan College to students enrolled on the National Council for Training of Journalists course.
