VIEWdigital editor Brian Pelan has been speaking to a range of deaf people and organisations to find out their views about justice and inequality issues for the deaf community ahead of the publication of the next edition of VIEW social affairs magazine.

In this short film, guest editor Dr Bronagh Byrne, an academic at Queen’s University Belfast, tells Brian about the difficulties she faced going for the Covid-19 vaccination in the SSE Arena in Belfast.

In the next short film, to be released next week, deaf actor and artist Paula Clarke will talk about her experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic.

When contacted, a spokesperson for the South Eastern HSC Trust said: “We would like to apologise for Dr Byrne’s experience. We have transparent masks available to all staff and it is unfortunate that staff did not use them on this occasion. We have worked to ensure the facility is accessible to all users and it is disappointing to hear that the masks were not used.

“We will ensure the use of masks is reiterated at safety briefings over the next period to ensure all users feel comfortable during their visit to the Covid-19 Vaccination Centre.”
